The non-profit organization Convictus Estonia, established in 2002 in order to support people who use drugs and their loved ones so that they would be able to live full lives, is the greatest harm reduction organization in Estonia.
The central idea of harm reduction is to reduce harms and various costs to society, as well as to the drug users themselves and their loved ones, associated with the use of drugs.
The harm reduction model takes into account the fact that many people who use drugs are not capable or willing to stop their drug use. Access to proper treatment options is important to people with substance use issues, but many don’t have it, or simply don’t wish to get treated. Because of that, people who use drugs need various social services to help minimize the risks associated with using drugs and the harms caused to themselves and others.
Harm reduction helps people live safer and healthier lives. Each and every positive change that people bring about in their lives is important. Instead of coercing, harm reduction measures tend to be supportive.
Work at Convictus is coordinated by a three-member Board representing the organization in all legal procedures. The highest authority of the non-profit organization Convictus Estonia is the General Assembly, which has the licence to amend the Charter and the objective of the organization, to elect the Council of Elders, to elect the members of the Board and to verify the annual report. In concert with the Council of Elders, the General Assembly is convened by the Board once a year.
